Curious Giants

Curious Giants was photographed during one of the most extraordinary grey whale encounters I have experienced in Baja California.

At one point, we were surrounded by around twenty whales.

Rather than keeping their distance, several of them repeatedly approached the boat, moving slowly through the water and seemingly choosing to investigate the people around them.

From above, the scale of the encounter became much clearer.

The whales dwarfed everything around them, yet there was nothing intimidating about the scene. Their movements were calm, deliberate and remarkably curious.

That contrast is what stayed with me.

Curious Giants is a photograph about connection, a moment when some of the largest animals in the ocean chose to close the distance themselves.
