Behind the Photograph

The story
behind the image.

Batian & Nelion

Mount Kenya, Kenya · 2021

Batian & Nelion was photographed from above Mount Kenya in 2021.

From the air, the mountain takes on a completely different scale.

Its highest peaks, Batian and Nelion, rise sharply from the surrounding landscape, their ridgelines and rock faces catching the light while the world below begins to fall away.

What drew me to this view was the sense of isolation.

At that height, the peaks feel almost removed from everything around them - rugged, exposed and shaped by conditions that can change in an instant.

Batian & Nelion is a photograph about scale and perspective, a view of Mount Kenya stripped back to its highest points, suspended above the landscape below.
