Daybreak

Daybreak was photographed at sunrise in the Maasai Mara in 2021.

As the first light began to spread across the horizon, an African elephant moved slowly through the grass, feeding in the cool of the morning.

With the sun still low, the animal was reduced almost entirely to silhouette, its outline standing against the warm light of a new day.

What drew me to the scene was its simplicity.

There was no dramatic behaviour, just the steady rhythm of an elephant feeding as the landscape slowly came to life around it.

Daybreak is a photograph about quiet beginnings, a fleeting moment when one of Africa’s largest animals became little more than a dark shape against the rising sun.
