Najin

Najin was photographed at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya in 2021.

She is one of the last northern white rhinoceroses on Earth - an individual whose story has become inseparable from the story of a species pushed to the very edge of extinction.

For this photograph, I deliberately stepped away from the close portrait.

Najin stands alone in the centre of the frame, surrounded by open landscape and an enormous sky filled with clouds. In black and white, the scene became quieter and more atmospheric, allowing the scale of the space around her to become part of the photograph.

There is something difficult about looking at an animal knowing that so few like her remain.

Najin is a photograph about presence and absence, one individual standing within a vast landscape, carrying with her the weight of what has already been lost and the hope that her species' story is not yet finished.
