The Sacred Mountain

The Sacred Mountain was photographed from above Mount Ololokwe in Kenya in 2021.

From the air, the mountain feels almost impossibly distinct from the landscape surrounding it.

Its steep rock faces rise abruptly from the plains, while the habitat below stretches outward in every direction, a patchwork of dry earth, vegetation and winding natural patterns.

What drew me to the scene was the relationship between the mountain and everything around it.

Rather than photographing Ololokwe in isolation, I wanted the frame to show the wider landscape that gives it its scale and sense of place.

The Sacred Mountain is a photograph about landscape, perspective and belonging, a view of one of northern Kenya's most distinctive landmarks rising above the habitat that surrounds it.
