Blue In Blue

Blue in the Blue was photographed from above during an encounter with a blue whale in Baja California in 2026.

As the whale began to rise towards the surface, its enormous body slowly became visible through the water beneath me.

From the air, the sense of scale was extraordinary.

The whale seemed almost to merge with the ocean around it, different shades of blue separating the animal from the water only as it came closer to the surface.

Then, for a brief moment, it broke through to breathe.

What stayed with me was the simplicity of the scene: one of the largest animals on Earth surrounded almost entirely by open ocean.
