Eye Contact

Eye Contact was photographed during an encounter with a juvenile grey whale in Baja California in 2026.

The young whale approached closely and lingered near the camera, turning its head until its eye was directed straight towards me.

For a few seconds, the encounter felt remarkably still.

Grey whales are enormous animals, but moments like this make their size almost secondary. What stays with you is the sense of curiosity - the feeling that the animal is not simply passing by, but actively looking back.

That connection is what made the frame.

Eye Contact is a photograph about curiosity and trust, a brief moment of mutual attention between two very different lives meeting at the surface.
