Mako

Mako was photographed during an open-ocean encounter in Baja California in 2026.

The shark passed alongside me in profile, revealing the full shape of an animal built almost entirely for speed.

From the pointed snout and streamlined body to the powerful tail, every part of a shortfin mako seems designed for movement. Even at a relatively relaxed pace, there is an unmistakable sense of energy held within the animal.

As it turned, its teeth became clearly visible, a detail that gives the photograph an edge without taking away from the elegance of its form.

What struck me most was the balance between those two qualities.

Mako is a portrait of precision and power, an opportunity to see one of the ocean’s fastest predators not as a fleeting silhouette, but in its entirety.
