Split The Blue

Split the Blue was photographed during an open-ocean encounter with a shortfin mako shark in Baja California in 2026.

As the shark moved beneath the surface, I positioned the camera so that the waterline divided the frame.

Above it was open sky.

Below it, the deep blue of the ocean and the unmistakable shape of the mako moving through its own world.

What drew me to the image was that separation.

The surface became a boundary between two environments, one familiar to us, and another that belongs entirely to the animals beneath it.

For a few seconds, both existed within the same photograph.

Split the Blue is a photograph about perspective - a glimpse across the thin line that separates our world from that of one of the ocean’s most extraordinary predators.
