Baraka The Blind

Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya · 2021

Baraka the Blind is a portrait of one of Ol Pejeta Conservancy's most recognisable black rhinoceroses.

Baraka lost his eyesight during his life, but remained a striking presence within the conservancy and became an animal known to countless visitors.

Photographing him felt very different from photographing a completely wild rhino encounter.

There was time to slow down and focus on the details that made him individual - the texture of his skin, the shape of his horn and the quiet strength in his face.

Rather than trying to photograph him as a symbol of an entire species, I wanted this frame to feel like a portrait of Baraka himself.

Baraka the Blind is a photograph about individuality and resilience - a reminder that conservation is ultimately built around individual lives, each with their own history and story.
